This page has everything you need to begin your motorcycle journey in New Hampshire. From official websites to helpful pamphlets and resources, you'll find clear, reliable information to guide you through getting your motorcycle license and taking your first steps as a new rider.

The Journey

1. Check Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a motorcycle learner’s permit or endorsement in New Hampshire.

Riders under 18 must also complete an approved driver‑education class or provide parental consent and a Basic Rider Course (BRC) completion card before endorsement.

2. Gather Documents & Fees

Bring a current NH driver’s license or NH non‑driver ID (or be prepared to obtain a motorcycle‑only license) and proof of age New Hampshire DMV.

You’ll pay a $30 application fee (which covers both the learner’s permit and the endorsement if done within one year) New Hampshire DMV.

Be ready for a vision screening at the DMV; it’s required for the permit.

3. Obtain Your Learner’s Permit

Visit any NH DMV office to take the written motorcycle knowledge test, based on the NH Motorcycle Operator Manual, and pass the vision test.

Once you pass, you’ll receive a 45‑day learner’s permit, allowing daylight‑only riding, no passengers, and compliance with all permit restrictions.

4. Complete Your Training

Enroll in and finish a Basic Rider Course (BRC), either through the NH DMV’s Rider Training Program or any MSF‑approved provider.

NH DMV BRC fee: $155 for residents ($205 for non‑residents).

A completed BRC waives the DMV road skills test, letting you skip directly to endorsement.

5. (Alternate) Pass the Road Skills Test

If you opt not to take a BRC, schedule a motorcycle skills test at the DMV.

Provide your own motorcycle (registered, inspected, and insured) and pass all maneuvers to qualify.

6. Apply for Your Endorsement

Return to the DMV with your learner’s permit, BRC completion card (if used), or skills‑test results.

Pay the $30 endorsement fee and submit any additional paperwork.

7. Receive Your Endorsement

The DMV will add the motorcycle endorsement to your existing driver’s license, or issue a motorcycle‑only license, officially permitting you to ride on NH roads.
